Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax (GSTT)

A federal tax imposed on assets that and are left directly to grandchildren and generations below grandchildren (“skip” a generation). This tax first came into regulation in 1976 to prevent families from avoiding the estate tax for one or more generations by making bequests directly to grandchildren.
