A tax imposed on the heirs when they receive a distribution. This is different from an estate tax which is a tax on the estate before any distributions occur. Currently, six states impose an inheritance tax: Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
