Portability

The provision in the federal estate tax law that allows any part of the $11-million-plus estate tax exemption not used by the first spouse to die can go to the surviving spouse, effectively doubling the estate tax exemption for a married couple. Even if one's estate is not large enough to trigger a tax, an estate tax return should be filed to transfer the unused portion of the exemption to a widow or widower.
