A sprinkling or spray trust is of use when the trustee is given broad discretion to distribute trust assets to the beneficiaries as their need arises. The trustee can release “a some here and a some there”, in effect “sprinkling” or “spraying” the trust funds to the beneficiaries over time. This discretion is often used in cases where the beneficiaries aren’t responsible, but not always the case. Sometimes the sprinkling provision is used for creditor protection as well (e.g., divorce).
